<b><u><span style="font-size: large;">The Creative Process</span></u></b></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
It's important, from time to time, to turn from your favorite media and work in a different way. Changing your materials can make your work more fresh and allows many more opportunities for exploration and discovery of form.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today I'd like to share with all of you a selection of my watercolor studies. These exercises did not all result in a piece of jewelry, but they lead to many exciting discoveries about form, color, and composition. Most importantly - they were super fun!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><u>The Process of Making: Preliminary Sketches</u></b></span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Since I often work in expensive or hard-to-get materials, it is very important to make certain design decisions before work on the final piece begins. The process of making a piece is so fluid - it starts with drawing upon drawing, followed by mock-ups in clay or paper, and then finally working in the final material. Any single work can go through several transformations, and can often look radically different from its original source material.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just for fun, let's look at a few sketches, and the pieces they turned into!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
This piece was originally going to be a more abstracted form, a la the bottom drawings. (Good thing it didn't turn out that way!) You can tell this was the first insect, because the forms were a lot more simplified. The wooden body is all one piece, as opposed to later works which were divided into sections like a real insect.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Some changes happen due to conscious design choices. Others are dictated by the demands and limitations of the medium. In this case, the design remains relatively faithful, except where the technical needs of the medium require a different solution. The three-dimensional form is much more expressive and alluring because the body appears frozen in action. This is because the body was put together in a curved profile rather than perfectly aligning each section like the sketch.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is a piece that underwent many changes during its creation. The first sketch is very faithful to the original creature because I was working from the form itself. I had found a dead Cicada Killer specimen in my yard and kept it to use as reference. It is SO much more helpful to work from a three-dimensional reference than from a picture, especially when you yourself are working in three dimensions!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the second picture, you can see that the piece was originally much more cluttered. In the original concept, this piece was a wasp hair comb with a honeycomb form. I ended up scrapping the honeycomb - the piece was much stronger after editing that out!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The third picture is the piece as it was originally intended to be worn. I'm ultimately happy it became a brooch - it is certainly much more practical this way.</div>

<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is a great example of the power of editing. These were originally going to have bees at the top with a gradient cascade of amber. It became clear that the strength of the concept was in the play of color and didn't need the extra element of the bee. I was able to continue the thought in "Worker's Repose", which takes elements from the original sketch but goes in a different direction.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><b><u>Moving Forward</u></b></span><br />
<br />
The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show was so amazing. I had such a blast talking to everyone and seeing all of the lovely works. In fact, I had such a good time that I decided I wanted my own booth this year!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-nXBmGZJhYE-6k2fZu4SIGofkzZ7HAPtqpcBy_4ILiXd7-TM7yjNcf3tGJxvJ2YVoWCdmAmSKUde4sHeuFN9Bzdcs8j8ssqzqW1YiyiF1MQMiK8BveLf426g30GIOK8ZumTy4mtJq_mzk/s1600/craft+show+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-nXBmGZJhYE-6k2fZu4SIGofkzZ7HAPtqpcBy_4ILiXd7-TM7yjNcf3tGJxvJ2YVoWCdmAmSKUde4sHeuFN9Bzdcs8j8ssqzqW1YiyiF1MQMiK8BveLf426g30GIOK8ZumTy4mtJq_mzk/s400/craft+show+3.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
When the thought entered my brain I thought "What are you, a crazy person??" (Answer: Very Likely...) Yes, I did have a lot of fun helping at the UARTS Alumni booth in November. But assisting a 21-person group booth and manning my own are two very, very different things.
<br />
<br />
First and foremost, I'd have to get juried into the show. After that, there's quite a bit of booth fees <br />
(all proceeds help the Museum, of course!). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then I would need to design and build a booth. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And most importantly, I'd have to make alllll the work to fill it!
<br />
<br />
That's a lot of money and even more work! I must have been crazy! <br />
But great things never happen when you do what is comfortable.
<br />
<br /></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCWIHDM0Dwb_oGqwsoYy1eN9sVyaBDvIC8_EzAt3Crj17AWp0q5c387qZdnbK5ha62B0GbAR9J7AuG0cbo2IUs_Ub4HkY-wpPw-M1aPgOJlQgzbFT53IFx-ugHBY6KkFFiieixbm0ALpOC/s1600/_MG_7151.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCWIHDM0Dwb_oGqwsoYy1eN9sVyaBDvIC8_EzAt3Crj17AWp0q5c387qZdnbK5ha62B0GbAR9J7AuG0cbo2IUs_Ub4HkY-wpPw-M1aPgOJlQgzbFT53IFx-ugHBY6KkFFiieixbm0ALpOC/s400/_MG_7151.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, I submitted my work to be juried. This involved making some new works, since I'd sold quite a bit at the Craft Show last year. Then all I needed were some gorgeous photographs. <br />
<br />

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Unfortunately, I didn't make it into the show this year. However, just the process of applying was really exciting and pushed me out of my comfort zone. It gave me a chance to assess where I want my work to go and what I want to do with it.<br />
<br />
Now, on to bigger and better things! </div>

<u><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Catch Up Time!</b></span></u></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's been awhile, folks! When I'm busy in the studio, I often get so lost in the work that I forget to update the rest of the world. It's time for a little catch-up! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
I've had a lot going on, and I'll bore you with the details later. In the meantime, I have a lot of studio photos I've been dying to share.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First, let's check out some in-progress photos of my piece <br />"Worker's Repose"! <br />
(aka: "I make too many brooches!")</div>

It is truly remarkable how much work they were able to plan into the space - 17 alumni had work displayed, and only 4 of them were jewelers!<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijeSf43UPwMdAIdzH6ICjtINHglr3NJ0yudn4Qo0vHaMz5vyZWux-5TaHdy9-DtiJtfI1Eag47W-358qOdtsDihnS5i-lKKZ068h-_1VxqFQhVvPEAwXXPhMLQQ9Vg6maTxO2ciMS-456c/s1600/IMG_2391.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680560496823594018" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijeSf43UPwMdAIdzH6ICjtINHglr3NJ0yudn4Qo0vHaMz5vyZWux-5TaHdy9-DtiJtfI1Eag47W-358qOdtsDihnS5i-lKKZ068h-_1VxqFQhVvPEAwXXPhMLQQ9Vg6maTxO2ciMS-456c/s400/IMG_2391.JPG" /></a> The lovely jewelry cases. The padded drawers slid out from the opposite side for easy access to the pieces. The artists from left to right are <a href="http://joepillari.tumblr.com/">Joe Pillari</a>, <a href="http://www.kaitlinkerr.com/">Kaitlin Kerr</a>, and <a href="http://www.melissaguglielmo.com/">Melissa Gugliemlo</a>. You may notice some new insect pieces in the case. Everything except the bee necklace at the bottom has had a photo session with the marvelous Ken Yanoviak, and the photos are up on my website! I'll probably be posting more in-depth about these pieces later on.<br /><br />Notice those red dots? Red dots make Emi happy!<br /><br />I ended up selling Hive Queen, Wasp Comb, the mica earrings pictured, a pair of folded earrings, some pyrite studs, and a sterling silver/bone ring. Not a bad haul for my first craft show, and everyone who bought my pieces was really fun to talk to!<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlbHm4KYttXp8bpdsymVNDuYQZojsFij2jepE9hDEWbW_zmo1rw5Rps_ufdIWfm727XcrIOy1Nd-ZVa_4sftuoPU8Ayi0T3fyus1CgTCP65Qo77wo7UgV5DNcRBL6raCHSxfzV211e-bsL/s1600/IMG_2382.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 299px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680558882714859330" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlbHm4KYttXp8bpdsymVNDuYQZojsFij2jepE9hDEWbW_zmo1rw5Rps_ufdIWfm727XcrIOy1Nd-ZVa_4sftuoPU8Ayi0T3fyus1CgTCP65Qo77wo7UgV5DNcRBL6raCHSxfzV211e-bsL/s400/IMG_2382.JPG" /></a> Kaitlin Kerr modeling the fabulous Wasp Comb. You'll hear more about this when I can do a dedicated "making-of" post, but I struggled a lot with how to make this piece wearable. I couldn't decide whether to make it a brooch (the safe bet) or a hair comb. I'd always wanted to make an insect fascinator, and I decided to just go for it. Then, the woman who fell in love with the piece asked me if I would turn it into a brooch for her.<br />Ah well, it was a fun experiment, and it will look great as a brooch!<br />(Although I guess I should probably give it a new name...)<br /><br />The Craft Show was a whirlwind of incredible art, fun conversation, and super-nice people. I almost wish it had gone on for longer, except that the poor artists would have died of exhaustion! Doing this show was an excellent experience for me. Not only was it a firm deadline that vastly improved my artistic output, but I discovered that I really love chit-chatting and schmoozing with lots of people. It's made me seriously consider doing craft shows on my own.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoXOmTC8z74zzKLyWXkDXSGMXVJWbSSn2csdY25_3c6EgP3efqeQHAuCdWOXVqUhK_8x4NSVlBu0KMqVFiUzs-mQVX8djVHXsq1rLmOBppfT7KgdERmEXU1v-XSO9iy1-8rOjCTZLlyUOf/s1600/IMG_2525.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 299px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680569272618236242" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoXOmTC8z74zzKLyWXkDXSGMXVJWbSSn2csdY25_3c6EgP3efqeQHAuCdWOXVqUhK_8x4NSVlBu0KMqVFiUzs-mQVX8djVHXsq1rLmOBppfT7KgdERmEXU1v-XSO9iy1-8rOjCTZLlyUOf/s400/IMG_2525.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>Next up: some production work - like this customizable cicada ring, created today!</div><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div></div><br /></div>emi savacoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16399679425099125968noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063222260424505999.post-5486841603251301132011-11-06T10:00:00.001-08:002011-11-06T10:32:00.704-08:00Hive Queen's New Look<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLg-TXSkugqhmsVC_rh1CvUWXnLOZeERlH2yUt6twjyICNMMTdpepyB5XX873gznyjtdk1HfMxLBsIrkzr7SIq51QPoPwkUIPdLUq65qabKgrKp6wUsCQFc2m-mg3wNpilwBRSlTyfs2PD/s1600/photo+session1.jpg"></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi80nuXvlrsAXZZT_9NGivCUpiJFLgQ4SUFv8exCmp8jmAmZLMwD9rz9ZZV5yU8_pb06ozo6eCZTgzMpuWT73TG5Trbrl38CYk3HqEwRGUR-_QeJ9-unoXbh52okTbK5Xn69-WVHKN1YYf1/s1600/blogger1.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671945447121753794" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi80nuXvlrsAXZZT_9NGivCUpiJFLgQ4SUFv8exCmp8jmAmZLMwD9rz9ZZV5yU8_pb06ozo6eCZTgzMpuWT73TG5Trbrl38CYk3HqEwRGUR-_QeJ9-unoXbh52okTbK5Xn69-WVHKN1YYf1/s400/blogger1.jpg" /></a><span style="font-size:78%;">(Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic...)<br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:100%;">Some of you may recall way back in 2010 a few posts referring to my new piece, "Hive Queen". I'd gotten an ENORMOUS 156 carat citrine and used some salvaged wings off of an old piece that had been damaged. The piece was completed in 2010 and shown in a few places.</span></div><br /><p align="center"><span style="font-size:100%;">However...<br /><br />Something about this piece never sat right with me. Not only was I unhappy with the treatment of the citrine, but the wings started to bug me as well.<br /><br />Since the stone was so outrageous, it took attention away from the carved insect. It almost looked like I just glued the bee on top of it as an afterthought. As for the wings, in real life, queen bees actually have very small wings, much smaller than the salvaged wings from my old piece. And the pierced sterling wings, though lovely on their own, lacked a visual sparkle that would balance the bling-y citrine. What had seemed in my head to be an elegant solution turned out to be rather underwhelming in practice.</p></span><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLSthDlN9c9gV2FJfJNzcOqGMEtMjZaORxXdhd_K0kSFkpa7xuz8Rt9Br0O171s4G_-UyDAoN3hct_-TkeQ0zC2W_L7lnw5o3sRzJT8k8yDcuAKWgEF0Iqy-4rSHlpbyLjRHCErr7EeYvh/s1600/blogger2.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671945445973915682" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLSthDlN9c9gV2FJfJNzcOqGMEtMjZaORxXdhd_K0kSFkpa7xuz8Rt9Br0O171s4G_-UyDAoN3hct_-TkeQ0zC2W_L7lnw5o3sRzJT8k8yDcuAKWgEF0Iqy-4rSHlpbyLjRHCErr7EeYvh/s400/blogger2.jpg" /></a>So I took her apart.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Mn3mlJKo4iBGLKqXwyF_celvCA4BBYB_nJzpztakH98s5H7VWejzAdRsY1vThSObw4dQTmL918YSJW9d2DbPJmp9v2lItx8LD-cMDdJmsCgOXU5PIFQrueCIdUsAHnKrgvckHFMQTTUI/s1600/blogger3.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671945141578303650" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Mn3mlJKo4iBGLKqXwyF_celvCA4BBYB_nJzpztakH98s5H7VWejzAdRsY1vThSObw4dQTmL918YSJW9d2DbPJmp9v2lItx8LD-cMDdJmsCgOXU5PIFQrueCIdUsAHnKrgvckHFMQTTUI/s400/blogger3.jpg" /></a>Re-set the citrine, in a way that was more understated, yet made sense thematically.<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_KLP7Zfm0B4yuR494A2K9UqxU8SLNYxA5JAw9AWiTGbCPfpgTloL2kiY8zDCzxV9qbD5VzhbdiIxdVbMo0TRQ2NEc32dZr2vWk86T4Shnzw-y7A77D2ZV0XAGGMrjNzmHo3j-bGgO77v6/s1600/blogger4.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671945133532186402" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_KLP7Zfm0B4yuR494A2K9UqxU8SLNYxA5JAw9AWiTGbCPfpgTloL2kiY8zDCzxV9qbD5VzhbdiIxdVbMo0TRQ2NEc32dZr2vWk86T4Shnzw-y7A77D2ZV0XAGGMrjNzmHo3j-bGgO77v6/s400/blogger4.jpg" /></a> Gave a little extra attention to the back of the piece<br />(including a little baby citrine on the pin finding)<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhupg9_er6T6FqphAC7bayyJuOyj2M9kz6GX4gqOyii41tyE6XfXgxPt42s4hsEusZWENThjnhSMYnBiwjSk6ZZgf1YzySZnELOZTKLUMz3cHFusbr6q4bIzcPkhXMBiEoELYdsbbDhhepY/s1600/blogger5.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671945130527613986" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhupg9_er6T6FqphAC7bayyJuOyj2M9kz6GX4gqOyii41tyE6XfXgxPt42s4hsEusZWENThjnhSMYnBiwjSk6ZZgf1YzySZnELOZTKLUMz3cHFusbr6q4bIzcPkhXMBiEoELYdsbbDhhepY/s400/blogger5.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div>Then let the piece itself dictate the size of the wings. They are proportionally larger than a real queen's would be, but about the same as a normal worker.<br /></div><br /><div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR53yMrZnLjESfB9iA3Uk-IVDiR3BRLe81zXByIMEpATL8J4vTAC5kXtteJ1WuLwTQtLJwRxl73JNXXN8Y6VWlFv7Yq7mFeAXz3untkXRgRPXcm19KHq6g_dtZIjohxU0nXMYPkLcBONHo/s1600/blogger6.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671945115535955746" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR53yMrZnLjESfB9iA3Uk-IVDiR3BRLe81zXByIMEpATL8J4vTAC5kXtteJ1WuLwTQtLJwRxl73JNXXN8Y6VWlFv7Yq7mFeAXz3untkXRgRPXcm19KHq6g_dtZIjohxU0nXMYPkLcBONHo/s400/blogger6.jpg" /></a> And I incorporated mica. This was a suggestion from my boyfriend, who is not an artist but somehow comes up with incredible design ideas anyway. The mica added sparkle and color to the wings while lending the piece the visual fragility I'm fond of. I also popped a little flocking on the the back for some textural contrast.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv5ZcghrKCazUz9lTy6LZXqScUt_8j6ZUR558y54ZWSiLP4Xv0UphGUDvFIavrBgPyvBj2Rmta1O4-0xqLot9NjfaVfw9RitFtvYDhORqtGOpC3JnVQLcRdjIoRtO1IPMoQFbwKA7jWlTX/s1600/blogger7.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 272px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671945111552967506" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv5ZcghrKCazUz9lTy6LZXqScUt_8j6ZUR558y54ZWSiLP4Xv0UphGUDvFIavrBgPyvBj2Rmta1O4-0xqLot9NjfaVfw9RitFtvYDhORqtGOpC3JnVQLcRdjIoRtO1IPMoQFbwKA7jWlTX/s400/blogger7.jpg" /></a> So here is the final result, lovingly photographed by the talented Ken Yanoviak. The piece I had come to hate has now turned into something I really treasure. The play of colors is so much more compelling, the back of the piece got some love, and the wings are just plain lovely.<br /><br />You can come see this piece and more at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, November 10th - 13th at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.<br /><br />Details here:<br /><a href="http://pmacraftshow.org/">http://pmacraftshow.org/</a></div></div></div></div></div></div>emi savacoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16399679425099125968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063222260424505999.post-23571389374648018112011-11-06T09:17:00.000-08:002011-11-06T09:28:36.513-08:00And now, the big news...<div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQhzZ3KfKTaLJ2ORyrSs9xJHEzHaxjGoYbUmZEQUN6xGtEp0VdgVFfZDyOgqQYFdT6fqdhbfZHTiCw52xzqGtELkf5o-QYWdVdDKy5FFHi0qaw-r4C1YWIq0zaYGjo97mZ129fvjB6m_YH/s1600/PMA_Group_Card_front.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 283px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671934092104207970" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQhzZ3KfKTaLJ2ORyrSs9xJHEzHaxjGoYbUmZEQUN6xGtEp0VdgVFfZDyOgqQYFdT6fqdhbfZHTiCw52xzqGtELkf5o-QYWdVdDKy5FFHi0qaw-r4C1YWIq0zaYGjo97mZ129fvjB6m_YH/s400/PMA_Group_Card_front.jpg" /></a><br />I've been invited to display work with a group of other University of the Arts Crafts Alumni at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show!! First, I moved to Somerset, NJ, which meant moving my whole studio (bad) to a room in an old barn (awesome). Thanks so much to SWC for hosting me, and to my dad for making the fantastic displays.<br /><br />My camera is on the fritz right now, so I don't have the best photos, but I took a few with my cell phone and my boyfriend's awesome dad, Chuck Miley, got a few photos as well. (He's a book artist from Maplewood, NJ and makes fantastic pop-up and tunnel books! <a href="http://www.chuckmiley.com/">Check him out!</a>) I'll be popping by to get a more complete picture of the spread for everyone.<br /><br />In other news, the bee from the last in progress photo, "The Fall", was in the Art Unleashed show at The University of the Arts. It sold (awesome!) before I could get any finished photos of it. (less awesome.) I'm going to try and get in touch with the buyer to see if she might loan it back to me for a photo shoot. According to the people who met her, she is really gorgeous, so maybe I'll just have her model it for me!<br /><br />Hive Queen, in progress:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixqGwU7F_tICuVsR6UixhjG8-zIaXZ0Q32G8Fyq77_jC0279rgkYVoO3poZV5gaYnD04DMT7WxLYW6lyd7kMovGtkGuq2ZomLGQrn9gBOKMtfCLLMHRJ9EK18JEkQYCR03D3vO-xljAB-6/s1600/bee+progress2.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixqGwU7F_tICuVsR6UixhjG8-zIaXZ0Q32G8Fyq77_jC0279rgkYVoO3poZV5gaYnD04DMT7WxLYW6lyd7kMovGtkGuq2ZomLGQrn9gBOKMtfCLLMHRJ9EK18JEkQYCR03D3vO-xljAB-6/s400/bee+progress2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470033707998665202" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk13hzaxJvTjp7ViGonQ-UNpVkbvL3o5bt_5Bdq2mDfEn6nK4zh64FNok1XGL9vGrBnjPLn0PtK5el6EbZMcZ-Rx_uMg572GC9pqnNhP-KP08rQR6NKgavBFbmilX8MNJyy2EGpr7Mc1O4/s1600/bee+progress.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk13hzaxJvTjp7ViGonQ-UNpVkbvL3o5bt_5Bdq2mDfEn6nK4zh64FNok1XGL9vGrBnjPLn0PtK5el6EbZMcZ-Rx_uMg572GC9pqnNhP-KP08rQR6NKgavBFbmilX8MNJyy2EGpr7Mc1O4/s400/bee+progress.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470033703748062242" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXPJ24Hm8WEnEHd-19z3q2OBfVbS3_lRJORefDQ158quQqqDHEYhjbtYqviozMkuNxf9pSWqEp5loMOaKlSf6C4vr_nEQlWTf-3OTTUj0cDSd5SGQRXulSqghImsG-WAk1b2DFzBJjTwoT/s1600/bee+progress3.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXPJ24Hm8WEnEHd-19z3q2OBfVbS3_lRJORefDQ158quQqqDHEYhjbtYqviozMkuNxf9pSWqEp5loMOaKlSf6C4vr_nEQlWTf-3OTTUj0cDSd5SGQRXulSqghImsG-WAk1b2DFzBJjTwoT/s400/bee+progress3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470033718001190914" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ab8qzOSoX_gZEtFoH0U2IjYLnbsKxWbnJXGY22TgB2oBVHjo36Y_HcESRMUfD0PntYRaMpZjCjpbzjQUt2CKBtB3utuQhrVMtg0T4LUhqOSCyQlxjk0UF3eNr6Z69fzsY7jWZk0Ktfto/s1600/bailey+studio.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ab8qzOSoX_gZEtFoH0U2IjYLnbsKxWbnJXGY22TgB2oBVHjo36Y_HcESRMUfD0PntYRaMpZjCjpbzjQUt2CKBtB3utuQhrVMtg0T4LUhqOSCyQlxjk0UF3eNr6Z69fzsY7jWZk0Ktfto/s400/bailey+studio.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470034184694383458" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Bailey corkin' out on the floor of my studio. I had to curve the wings a bit to fit the bee into the display (it was a little shallow) so the positioning will be a little different once the show is over.<br /><br />You may notice the wings look rather familiar - they were scavenged from an old piece which was accidentally dropped by one of my professors. A happy accident - the wings were the best part of the old piece, which I wasn't pleased with. This incarnation is much better.<br /><br />In this show, you will see some old favorites...<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihMe7vqcGKTJspm9d-PHE9r9ZIzeH181zRpvjR8_CWgVTDnvN9KECxMx3LzBhTijBYmk7h9R8cfAPoq4SnUaGQ7AvT1PhfgpEpdtPPmWySuJQ199ORgjTnAQERWYB8mL9ND18o3bZPi5Pt/s1600/beetle+necklace.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihMe7vqcGKTJspm9d-PHE9r9ZIzeH181zRpvjR8_CWgVTDnvN9KECxMx3LzBhTijBYmk7h9R8cfAPoq4SnUaGQ7AvT1PhfgpEpdtPPmWySuJQ199ORgjTnAQERWYB8mL9ND18o3bZPi5Pt/s400/beetle+necklace.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470037692764283874" border="0" /><br /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNqVC4Z_2FxEknRIxUp814fGUmLFs73vAvClwRz25myvOViXPiACf6WJkomWw0Lc9ezaAIa4wznYxAaPKEkYrr42WS38NG_8ylqyawqZG04jBjjHmtCt3Xj0xLl8PPL-i2I9vy1m88Kx1F/s1600/cicada+pic.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNqVC4Z_2FxEknRIxUp814fGUmLFs73vAvClwRz25myvOViXPiACf6WJkomWw0Lc9ezaAIa4wznYxAaPKEkYrr42WS38NG_8ylqyawqZG04jBjjHmtCt3Xj0xLl8PPL-i2I9vy1m88Kx1F/s400/cicada+pic.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470037697909154466" border="0" /></a><br />One or two REALLY old favorites...<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil52ptTB_Mtpn772Wv6TtOAsyxkScuwyatBELPfmiuC40XXNQDpg4_LEd04KLLTwq4vPRBRuN0u75velZ6Wr1eOUhF0K2ldmhOtF4VcD6EOe9sZk-nEyIaneP_NYiJretXm_rWY78JhFN2/s1600/worm+pin.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil52ptTB_Mtpn772Wv6TtOAsyxkScuwyatBELPfmiuC40XXNQDpg4_LEd04KLLTwq4vPRBRuN0u75velZ6Wr1eOUhF0K2ldmhOtF4VcD6EOe9sZk-nEyIaneP_NYiJretXm_rWY78JhFN2/s400/worm+pin.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470037712424545058" border="0" /></a>...and a LOT of new production work! Where did the time go???) so I thought I'd post some pictures to give everyone a feel as to what I've been up to lately.<br /><br />During the week, I nanny for a couple of families in the area. It's really fun, the kids are cute, and the cash is definitely welcome (although I'm still pretty broke!) It can be exhausting though, and between that and the distractions of having a home studio, it's been hard to log a lot of hours at the bench.<br /><br />Speaking of benches...my dad helped me make my own custom jeweler's bench over the winter! It doesn't have drawers but I have plenty of storage elsewhere. It works really well for me! Thanks dad!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWRrVzptcwOEDGmyw7E2hsFYz2ClSKkjCdcbq88gJUtxEQfLv1_xO-69lUTFUBsYBFCLJiFbwDWNchjLTw25sWAXV_wib2RwKpVK3xD5gHXh49m5Nk3mKH99FLbRZchksJD88P8L3ubnnZ/s1600-h/in+progress+023.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWRrVzptcwOEDGmyw7E2hsFYz2ClSKkjCdcbq88gJUtxEQfLv1_xO-69lUTFUBsYBFCLJiFbwDWNchjLTw25sWAXV_wib2RwKpVK3xD5gHXh49m5Nk3mKH99FLbRZchksJD88P8L3ubnnZ/s400/in+progress+023.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451279347230326066" border="0" /></a>The other sweet thing I got for my studio was a KILN! My awesome boyfriend got it for me for Christmas. It's a peppy little thing - haven't gotten a chance to do much enameling but I did fire it up and it works really great. Thanks Phil! It's sitting on my lab table along with all of my soldering stuff. (including that killer Otto Frei soldering turntable, a totally worthwhile impulse buy.)<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgctFZFBx7tnXkrFBN6w41w3M8FjuEChWhxEQ-vp33w0DWCrXvLXykOE56AWYay7XYvilFUEmVuMKGKbfC3OH_jj0J_P9dE2eA_aaVM1Y0zUr4S2dQXKmb9bGJvau6pc7a6tM1gnllMYAeg/s1600-h/studio3.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgctFZFBx7tnXkrFBN6w41w3M8FjuEChWhxEQ-vp33w0DWCrXvLXykOE56AWYay7XYvilFUEmVuMKGKbfC3OH_jj0J_P9dE2eA_aaVM1Y0zUr4S2dQXKmb9bGJvau6pc7a6tM1gnllMYAeg/s400/studio3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451279354092203682" border="0" /></a>This is my "miscellaneous" work bench (also made by dad) - pickle pot, drill press, and my tumbler, aka "the Behemoth".<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZZ9KXrGXVMNXWe8jcUFDnmYOXCXHFflydklSYND7Pu-rpK6dgev09Qd54htrKN5ohpPkFqi07cR8xGhGLgco3yxu_EEvLB0SASGxd9JstWyimkFRcwxl2OxXCuNfWmSwjHCXvnKj4574i/s1600-h/studio2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZZ9KXrGXVMNXWe8jcUFDnmYOXCXHFflydklSYND7Pu-rpK6dgev09Qd54htrKN5ohpPkFqi07cR8xGhGLgco3yxu_EEvLB0SASGxd9JstWyimkFRcwxl2OxXCuNfWmSwjHCXvnKj4574i/s400/studio2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451279340385962690" border="0" /></a>And on the work front...I'm gonna save my bigger in-progress pieces for next post, because this one is huge already. However, I've also been chugging along with development for some production pieces.<br /><br />I went through a period where I bought a LOT of stones, for no other reason but that I loved them. What you see here are my experiments - these are going to be rings, and the black stones will be set with little tube-set CZs, like you see above. (There's a pristine stone in there so you can get a feel for it.)<br /><br />Somehow in my move from Philly my diamond drill set got lost, so this has to wait until the new one gets here from Rio Grande. I tried using a regular drill bit on the ones above but it was not happening.<br /><br />Side note - I wish I had my own personal metals resale. I waste so much time waiting for my supply orders, and I'm constantly getting derailed when I realize I'm missing something. I'm doing a couple of these. There's a few more things at Hoover and Strong right now getting cast - a couple of pairs of earrings and a carved cicada - but I forgot to take pictures before they left.<br /><br />A gem of knowledge I have gleaned from this experience of trying to work at home - force yourself into your studio every day. Even if you have no inspiration whatsoever, once you've been sitting at the bench for awhile, it will start to come to you. I'm still having trouble adjusting to the more relaxed work approach, though. Nothing at the moment compares to the old urgency of school and the Senior Show.<br /><br />I have to get up early to babysit tomorrow and this is getting long anyway, so at some point this week I'll fill you in with more of what I've been working on, including some one-off insect pieces for those of you missing the buggies. For now, I will leave you with a teaser...<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic3JCIPPdGe0rGSQ371rmY4naWX8DtttP-kpvZdO_ie-yW4MkzCNUJbj_MCbhfefULtVt5AlBix6szPbv10ic_zLyfjiLt3zdaOMZWKgUKDaJAcFMeq85qtPl3GFRsksTUQI8BsoQzbwWs/s1600-h/in+progress+051.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic3JCIPPdGe0rGSQ371rmY4naWX8DtttP-kpvZdO_ie-yW4MkzCNUJbj_MCbhfefULtVt5AlBix6szPbv10ic_zLyfjiLt3zdaOMZWKgUKDaJAcFMeq85qtPl3GFRsksTUQI8BsoQzbwWs/s400/in+progress+051.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451292078520418322" border="0" /></a>emi savacoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16399679425099125968noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063222260424505999.post-800873426880432342009-11-11T14:48:00.001-08:002009-11-11T14:52:05.632-08:00Review of "Paper or Plastic" in Tribune ReviewKurt Shaw of the Tribune-Review did a <a href=" http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/ae/museums/s_652704.html">piece</a> on the upcoming Paper or Plastic show and a photo of my piece is featured!<br /><br />I'm going to Pittsburgh for the opening, and I'll be sure to take lots of pictures and post my thoughts on the show. This is kind of a cheap update but trust me when I say the wait is worth it - I am holding off on some sweet announcements. Hopefully I can reveal them soon!<br /><br />Yesterday I received my new vibratory tumbler - used for polishing metal - and it is HUGE! Much larger than I expected - but it was the same price as one of the tiny rotary tumblers, so how could I say no? Too bad I'm not sharing a studio...<br /><br />Speaking of studio, I now have a heavy-duty dehumidifier for space, since it is incredibly damp down there. That means there are TWO dehumidifiers working 24/7 to get that place dry. Because of which, I can FINALLY paint it this weekend, barring any sudden torrential downpours. Fingers crossed!<br /><br />To tide you over, here's a sneak peek at some materials I'm playing around with...<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLh7Abzu0DSHCUZtiPHlIomNp_bVN0J6MxPgZ4CCyebemg_jeLazy_wREywSqzeJ6QQhYdc1Nljc1iT3mZFK_oPhnX39Zhm074noSp2jdwaCeGJLYLo6XdqEBvY8NlLFZuBx6qRUGoauSJ/s1600-h/elytra.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLh7Abzu0DSHCUZtiPHlIomNp_bVN0J6MxPgZ4CCyebemg_jeLazy_wREywSqzeJ6QQhYdc1Nljc1iT3mZFK_oPhnX39Zhm074noSp2jdwaCeGJLYLo6XdqEBvY8NlLFZuBx6qRUGoauSJ/s400/elytra.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385059878243135874" border="0" /></a>emi savacoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16399679425099125968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063222260424505999.post-44930427356000190912009-08-17T11:51:00.001-07:002009-08-17T11:53:37.660-07:00A quick update<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiisfXMmKeZFlUaCYqMoZ4I4C50eiVAZ7qCl-cWFYi5tBVzBhsj-vc_aK-2OmtCOJJLTm78f75WIWqkM8pLJHa6aOhKV0_t5Q6TUlrO3J2PzlhO2hNlTkjJf8VITY6o36LoTfkcIBzfQfMd/s1600-h/studio2.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiisfXMmKeZFlUaCYqMoZ4I4C50eiVAZ7qCl-cWFYi5tBVzBhsj-vc_aK-2OmtCOJJLTm78f75WIWqkM8pLJHa6aOhKV0_t5Q6TUlrO3J2PzlhO2hNlTkjJf8VITY6o36LoTfkcIBzfQfMd/s400/studio2.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371007742202825522" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhioJyZDKvH4qqJDRzfUCptV-f7tdSZHveUem-sK2S6XbZny60OCA6m2_ah6KRzNDdgCBCyitQ7vi6ow9Juwi_fK-OSJPHXDbZXym8WdTnRzEK13TBAha0Epol53nSWrdrkoxmAyYpoveQG/s1600-h/studio1.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhioJyZDKvH4qqJDRzfUCptV-f7tdSZHveUem-sK2S6XbZny60OCA6m2_ah6KRzNDdgCBCyitQ7vi6ow9Juwi_fK-OSJPHXDbZXym8WdTnRzEK13TBAha0Epol53nSWrdrkoxmAyYpoveQG/s400/studio1.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371007731992989154" border="0" /></a><br />Just wanted to share some photos of the bench setup. As you can see, we've jumped a bit in time - I don't have pictures between that one and this. In this picture, I have all of the pieces assembled (but not glued) - the carved boxwood body, the enameled wings, and the two sets of pierced silver components that sandwich the enameled pieces. I had decided to carve the wood a little more to get a better shape, hence the un-dyed portion.<br /><br />The part we are missing is the making of the silver wings. Each piece started out as part of one big sheet of silver, which was cut out with a tiny saw, filed, and shaped with hammers. The smaller silver pieces that make up the top layer have silver pegs on the bottom that poke through holes in both sets of lower wings and peg them into the wood body.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPyQvE9uPySFmweN-etu-_cypiLJF6NA9GW36E7GVF_Cw1vAEgphp9G5Pjumx33kRV01B8UyhkLanFKPjo1EVImW8GDtbtdGxj8e2e8tmeJgSdqYLoJd282rbFc9hCvo3Rooi179QsfA28/s1600-h/blog4.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPyQvE9uPySFmweN-etu-_cypiLJF6NA9GW36E7GVF_Cw1vAEgphp9G5Pjumx33kRV01B8UyhkLanFKPjo1EVImW8GDtbtdGxj8e2e8tmeJgSdqYLoJd282rbFc9hCvo3Rooi179QsfA28/s400/blog4.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5354078744887436434" border="0" /></a>Now that the beetle was pretty much taken care of, I needed to make the rest of the necklace. If I just strung it on a plain chain, it would look unbalanced, especially in regards to color. These spiculum pieces, made of copper and enamel, were made to go on either side of the bug. The bottom copper shape is what it looks like before it is formed with hammers and a sinusoidal stake.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCIgKUsw_XaPqrLy-KXMJt66z9ZMoK6NRytp7dCtBjfMWs7QGQcRzfDI_HLJ2Bo1U1ASuTsFQ0zkGk-FNh7V6afb6DxdtoFKSJcmkGHJDDXvYz3PVxN5JTatCLwVpPFjXGPPbuFMAYn4ds/s1600-h/blog3.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCIgKUsw_XaPqrLy-KXMJt66z9ZMoK6NRytp7dCtBjfMWs7QGQcRzfDI_HLJ2Bo1U1ASuTsFQ0zkGk-FNh7V6afb6DxdtoFKSJcmkGHJDDXvYz3PVxN5JTatCLwVpPFjXGPPbuFMAYn4ds/s400/blog3.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5354078743342309666" border="0" /></a><br />A lot of my designing is done on the fly. Pretty much 90% of the time I have no idea what the piece is going to look like once I'm finished. Here, I tested out a few different layouts for the chain - this one used tiny commercial chain to connect to the beetle, and the large links were oriented upside-down.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYH_74Oj5Jdjdbb7o2cRI1rzIowI_wB5TfCyEhNwz00tClgxvsda2XePZwdY8WrxuTplElReB5ntX4q4uOgUpzb7v1er0HZeGxzuf3fN0AWr3NRKatTKFrbGS4U353cldLrzvEalRhs72K/s1600-h/blog5.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYH_74Oj5Jdjdbb7o2cRI1rzIowI_wB5TfCyEhNwz00tClgxvsda2XePZwdY8WrxuTplElReB5ntX4q4uOgUpzb7v1er0HZeGxzuf3fN0AWr3NRKatTKFrbGS4U353cldLrzvEalRhs72K/s400/blog5.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5354078748983821042" border="0" /></a>My baby is all grown up! All components of the beetle are finished/oxidized, the body dyed and sealed, and everything glued together and drying. After this, I hammered the links of the chain and oxidized them before assembling. The sad part about my photos is that you can't see the clasp on this piece, which I really like - it's a toggle clasp made up of a large silver ring and an enameled spiculum. Oh well, so there you go - a semi-complete look into the journey of making one of my pieces! This one was the most challenging to carve because it had to hug the other body piece exactly. The wood pieces were pegged together with rods of sterling silver, and the fit had to be snug<br />so that the silver would not show.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPiLcUOON4dRmElOS9MfVjwu2weWYhOwlx5QPeS9gArLOYirXx2oVI814gE23S_Eq9Vuc5dFFgZ-jlvOtOBIGcVHNs8tnNvssfbKQ8MxVoO2iQHtm5WhWX_vqvtHJ_pJcK0MikgAQvRdHt/s1600-h/blog2.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPiLcUOON4dRmElOS9MfVjwu2weWYhOwlx5QPeS9gArLOYirXx2oVI814gE23S_Eq9Vuc5dFFgZ-jlvOtOBIGcVHNs8tnNvssfbKQ8MxVoO2iQHtm5WhWX_vqvtHJ_pJcK0MikgAQvRdHt/s400/blog2.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5348491459522650690" border="0" /></a>After adding an additional wood piece to articulate where the wings attach and pegging everything together, the piece was ready to sand and dye! Our shop tech let me borrow a leather dye that he described as "blacker than black". Yummy~!<br /><br />After I painted the dye on, I burnished the surface of the wood with a brass brush to work the color in. I did this about 3 times. Later, I sprayed the whole thing with a clear glossy sealant to make the surface more "beetle-y".<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRIFmM06Toc0EM3qUj5zBCX2SX8oZ50RXEJS-dhauV24KPFRb0vMiz2iKWtIiNX2FlyJO0ASPKLc4_29PEOMvlSVLZHQGdJqgT2CFXnYTt_WDfdCkUnik-dekVuZ6eW_d-yOwiwXltOQdf/s1600-h/blog3.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRIFmM06Toc0EM3qUj5zBCX2SX8oZ50RXEJS-dhauV24KPFRb0vMiz2iKWtIiNX2FlyJO0ASPKLc4_29PEOMvlSVLZHQGdJqgT2CFXnYTt_WDfdCkUnik-dekVuZ6eW_d-yOwiwXltOQdf/s400/blog3.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5348491467682850194" border="0" /></a>Time for the fun part - COLOR! I tend to do a LOT of samples, especially when I'm enameling, because I'm reeeeally picky about the final product. These are a few of my color samples for the outer wings of the beetle. Since I was not making a total copy of any particular beetle species, I needed to come up with a color combination that was alluring as jewelry but also looked convincing on an insect.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhodt170st6-npBISdXUKHQwJXjWasjtGW1tv_ZirXZJDw_YkybFGS6L_mNWhDq9xyQcuPodJ4WYrUBFhrZiqwsAprgwvTzYg2XYaxyyzwiZxrlWgl5bjA-0awc38dOVRVEsT3uWuKCXtJ1/s1600-h/blog4.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhodt170st6-npBISdXUKHQwJXjWasjtGW1tv_ZirXZJDw_YkybFGS6L_mNWhDq9xyQcuPodJ4WYrUBFhrZiqwsAprgwvTzYg2XYaxyyzwiZxrlWgl5bjA-0awc38dOVRVEsT3uWuKCXtJ1/s400/blog4.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5348491468401592578" border="0" /></a>I experimented with many transparent enamels to come up with the right color and pattern. These were my final two samples. I decided to go with the left one - the more orangey-red didn't have enough contrast with the greens I chose.<br /><br />In total, I layered 5 different enamel colors to get the right colors. The reactions between the different layers ended up being important, too - the speckling effect was due to one of the bottom layers coming up through to the top.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqk9Tk1CyIuN15Aqi8O7H3w_4_Fla-vdzgEeJlsvwTS5FWGVHaczyLqgeXChc7WB9z2TygUuZu7YIhJlH8cd9TzUKOEQZ8n7-kyuscvpYttLdlckfraRrFj1WzCnnnUSZa5N2lxyzfOxcu/s1600-h/blog5.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqk9Tk1CyIuN15Aqi8O7H3w_4_Fla-vdzgEeJlsvwTS5FWGVHaczyLqgeXChc7WB9z2TygUuZu7YIhJlH8cd9TzUKOEQZ8n7-kyuscvpYttLdlckfraRrFj1WzCnnnUSZa5N2lxyzfOxcu/s400/blog5.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5348491475632145570" border="0" /></a>Here you can see the wood carving of the body along with the final wing samples and the shaped copper pieces for the actual wings, pre-enamel.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-style: italic;">to be continued in Part Three...</span></div><br /></div>emi savacoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16399679425099125968noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063222260424505999.post-34910104001467196562009-06-10T19:34:00.000-07:002009-06-10T20:43:42.695-07:00A Journey in Making, Part One<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_6qo6SryHM9-WuM1XfCYf50TowuUOYMSX18HZ1FMbVAXWUX0INtEQqIlt7VSsQSRxF8GJq1hPvxx7HYGrZ7zRnuY4A_xxtt-aDKQAtQijHrc80kQzSFCrkI4kk00MTk62Wgbf7LAkhkCq/s1600-h/beetle1-2.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 367px; height: 316px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_6qo6SryHM9-WuM1XfCYf50TowuUOYMSX18HZ1FMbVAXWUX0INtEQqIlt7VSsQSRxF8GJq1hPvxx7HYGrZ7zRnuY4A_xxtt-aDKQAtQijHrc80kQzSFCrkI4kk00MTk62Wgbf7LAkhkCq/s400/beetle1-2.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345904750365738930" border="0" /></a>(photo: "Khepera". carved boxwood, sterling silver, enamel on copper. copyright emi savacool, 2009. model credit: kaitlin kerr. photo credit: ken yanoviak.)<br /><br />I've encountered many people who are totally floored when I tell them the price of a piece. Most people are not accustomed to paying much for jewelry - and when H&M sells necklaces for less than 10 dollars, why would you want to pay any more?<br /><br />I always try to explain to them that the price reflects the amount of hours that go into a particular piece of jewelry. In addition to the artist's unique concept, which is valuable in and of itself, there is a HUGE amount of skilled labor in Crafts. In fact, when you break it down, many times the artist is actually selling their piece at a loss!<br /><br />To help explain why it takes so much time to make a piece, I've decided to do a little "show-and-tell". For my last piece, "Khepera", I took many in-progress photographs, which I am happy to share with you now!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjABnl-pm1qRyOr5qF9iC994AHwnPxyiRNblbzLyeFARqP9pb54FifcxoIh4x2UU1VhpPg6UvadSP55d5xLfeyxK3vjCDswlkiilc6uIAbXUTdcPkVKNVAbxej5DxtpNGsATBs-Fms51IFB/s1600-h/blog1.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjABnl-pm1qRyOr5qF9iC994AHwnPxyiRNblbzLyeFARqP9pb54FifcxoIh4x2UU1VhpPg6UvadSP55d5xLfeyxK3vjCDswlkiilc6uIAbXUTdcPkVKNVAbxej5DxtpNGsATBs-Fms51IFB/s400/blog1.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345895702157979746" border="0" /></a> We start with the inspiration. This winter I had ordered two mounted specimens, a cicada and a beetle, in order to help me understand the three-dimensional qualities of these insects. The beetle in particular was stunning and dramatic. Next to the beetle, you can see what I started with - a thick block of boxwood.<br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjELgIImFQmRQaFLHB70bTomlLlzclcM7ygDudXdrwQt4RdVzl8o_IivLfHoAFVFIBRvw0VGNwk_9MarPaX4BRgXcnNXAlaxk3tWJ1RZPelPWufR5B8pvFQ8HkVl8sjyHrclY1Bgf7AS2u9/s1600-h/blog2.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjELgIImFQmRQaFLHB70bTomlLlzclcM7ygDudXdrwQt4RdVzl8o_IivLfHoAFVFIBRvw0VGNwk_9MarPaX4BRgXcnNXAlaxk3tWJ1RZPelPWufR5B8pvFQ8HkVl8sjyHrclY1Bgf7AS2u9/s400/blog2.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345897772178441778" border="0" /></a>I made a very rough mock-up of the form of the head with plasticine clay, then roughed out the general form in wood with a bandsaw. My fingers are itching already. <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBTrk8p46rJhZ2azUIg0JClvmp3vWKf8e9elhFAuR58kh3CHdQXfkKgHYukbdJfXMRztPOwpzHBJPnPjzgAMArGA5dzn6GEUS1VHZtoHogp7sKqgd500aCnIXDPzzfdR3nGf4WsfFFYtwj/s1600-h/training+video+012.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBTrk8p46rJhZ2azUIg0JClvmp3vWKf8e9elhFAuR58kh3CHdQXfkKgHYukbdJfXMRztPOwpzHBJPnPjzgAMArGA5dzn6GEUS1VHZtoHogp7sKqgd500aCnIXDPzzfdR3nGf4WsfFFYtwj/s400/training+video+012.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342845591748841458" /></a><br />This is my new bench! It's not <span style="font-style:italic;">technically</span> a jeweler's bench - it's a lab table that my dad got from a job he finished in New Brunswick. Still, the whole thing is fire-resistant, it's really sturdy, and it looks really sharp. The only problem I anticipate is not having a bench pan to catch my filings, but I might ghetto-rig something up.<br /><br />I can't stress enough how hard I am trying to keep working at jewelry. I'm trying to do one studio-related chore a day, and so far I have gotten a lot done. Looking at everyone's blog updates keeps me really motivated - it makes me want to work when I see that other people are working too.<br /><br />This Friday - <a href="http://www.thedcca.org/museumshop.html">Crafts Exhibition at the DCCA!</a> (Congrats to Maricha for having her piece featured on the website!)emi savacoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16399679425099125968noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063222260424505999.post-37145573905154014062009-05-26T10:50:00.000-07:002009-05-26T11:13:53.445-07:00Cameo<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF5AsKtrnMhMujYtzAc4cnD2lCE-bFw-zZg9R4BYxGcYQdr-VO84aVNlP16iMF45p2NTJJZGHWlXgUSHKDj-5QASvKuUO_Mr7mYwiLUREHxDycuGWUPL_BNNPO0R5XX-QOZD33hCkwLRSI/s1600-h/cameo-brooch.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 174px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF5AsKtrnMhMujYtzAc4cnD2lCE-bFw-zZg9R4BYxGcYQdr-VO84aVNlP16iMF45p2NTJJZGHWlXgUSHKDj-5QASvKuUO_Mr7mYwiLUREHxDycuGWUPL_BNNPO0R5XX-QOZD33hCkwLRSI/s200/cameo-brooch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340194196299710482" /></a> There was an assignment in Advanced Jewelry where we had to create some sort of cameo. We're accustomed to the image of the Roman-inspired cameo, where layered agate is carved into a profile portrait, usually of a beautiful woman.<br /><br />This assignment was meant to elaborate on the idea of a cameo. What makes a cameo? What qualities does it have? How does it describe a person differently than an actual portrait? Narrowing this down, we came up with a few criteria: cameos were usually in relief, and they described some attributes about their subject - physically or emotionally - without including a background or context.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqTlvaAOE0ufgg5MuXl770c-NsS1rB0ZtCUmgSXNuRZmTGheOC4QRstOjO2oKaBY8fQUtPx1a226P9pA58GrmxSH0TdLI0_1ehD06m_uq-PMLKwbiJPT9YA2CCtqY3F86MQvrYvL6UQz5H/s1600-h/dead+bee.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 381px; height: 285px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqTlvaAOE0ufgg5MuXl770c-NsS1rB0ZtCUmgSXNuRZmTGheOC4QRstOjO2oKaBY8fQUtPx1a226P9pA58GrmxSH0TdLI0_1ehD06m_uq-PMLKwbiJPT9YA2CCtqY3F86MQvrYvL6UQz5H/s400/dead+bee.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340194096036235650" /></a><br />This project was difficult for me to start, but the result was my favorite piece - inspired by stories from my beekeeper friend Jacqui (jacquialexander.com) and by the beautiful image above (not by me - but I can't find the artist's name.)<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS34eptAcq7z020bGctgXjH14e9sRLPhoperfKPnXFmsWt_Br8rI_Geum2GSD3Of3dibAFnTlxJez0XzTbX9hrT1RLJxyC2xucHU4IVtdcyN-tml4kZ4PBajD2QpkTidcsOVJaajcuo7KD/s1600-h/Elegy+-+1.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS34eptAcq7z020bGctgXjH14e9sRLPhoperfKPnXFmsWt_Br8rI_Geum2GSD3Of3dibAFnTlxJez0XzTbX9hrT1RLJxyC2xucHU4IVtdcyN-tml4kZ4PBajD2QpkTidcsOVJaajcuo7KD/s400/Elegy+-+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340193947772294306" /></a><br />(photo: "Elegy". carved boxwood, sterling silver, nickel silver, onyx, dyes. copyright emi savacool, 2009. photo credit: ken yanoviak.)emi savacoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16399679425099125968noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5063222260424505999.post-58764574124278951682009-05-25T23:04:00.000-07:002009-05-26T09:11:15.762-07:00back it up, back it up...I've been trying to post my pieces in order, but I got a bit ahead of myself in excitement. Here's two related pieces that I completed in the fall of 2008. During the summer, I had been picking raspberries in the backyard of my parents' house. In the woods, I came upon the perfect skeleton of a deer lying curled in the leaves. In the hot, quiet afternoon, it looked as if it were sleeping. <br /><br />I couldn't stop thinking about this skeleton for weeks and weeks. The day I left to go back to Philly, I took a big bucket out into the woods and collected the entire skeleton.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzvozpN48mG-hHwtrbGG2c8wmb5Av2-JkwcZN2A9H9trjNWxnUqcIfsGB065z79f4h56ubawBu-_9LxHfRe46-rA9EkxdwxQnBIJl8e5NM9roEtsi7b4u4UOroJKGlT6pXPddH-TEtRWm0/s1600-h/438604086_YAHCz-L.jpg" border = 1> <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzvozpN48mG-hHwtrbGG2c8wmb5Av2-JkwcZN2A9H9trjNWxnUqcIfsGB065z79f4h56ubawBu-_9LxHfRe46-rA9EkxdwxQnBIJl8e5NM9roEtsi7b4u4UOroJKGlT6pXPddH-TEtRWm0/s320/438604086_YAHCz-L.jpg" border="1" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340012306607514706" /></a>(photo: "Osis Mantodea". carved boxwood, sterling silver, ruby, stainless steel, bone, pigment. copyright emi savacool, 2008. photo credit: ken yanoviak.)<br /><br />"Osis Mantodea" was the first piece featuring a bit of this gorgeous skeleton. My teacher had suggested that I try and invent imaginary bug forms instead of using existing ones. This piece was completed for a project where we had to make something in one week. (?!! Why did I decide to do this?!! I'm a lunatic...)<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijuxy3oPZxTULzbWjtY-pMLAf5sBHaejlLDsUjbWclcKbONKgiAswkrVQ-GFqmZARt5eEwAmdfakE-MIEhW7RH8P4ucYY2gJ9J_y1xG7yHUp_wpivAAgmPzjkWtroi2p8bW0Y06n-yT6at/s1600-h/remnant+curios.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijuxy3oPZxTULzbWjtY-pMLAf5sBHaejlLDsUjbWclcKbONKgiAswkrVQ-GFqmZARt5eEwAmdfakE-MIEhW7RH8P4ucYY2gJ9J_y1xG7yHUp_wpivAAgmPzjkWtroi2p8bW0Y06n-yT6at/s320/remnant+curios.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340011557602325538" /></a> (photo: "Remnant Curios". carved boxwood, bone, pigment, sterling silver. copyright emi savacool, 2008. photo credit: ken yanoviak.)<br /><br />I love these little guys. I'm so excited to share with you my pieces from the Crafts Senior Show, <span style="font-weight:bold;">Out of Hand</span>. I'm going to span them out a little so I have space to tell you about each one.<br /><br />This piece may look a little familiar. It was photographed in progress (only the paper parts) for the <span style="font-weight:bold;">Out of Hand</span> gallery book and invitations. This piece was inspired by the life of the cicada, who emerges from the ground after 17 years to mate and die. They can be done in most mediums, but are supposed to be fairly true to what the piece would look like in real life. I prefer to make my renderings in gouache and watercolor on bright paper. I am working on making the earrings on purple paper in real life - I'll keep you posted!emi savacoolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16399679425099125968noreply@blogger.com3
